Single-serve coffee systems are designed to make preparing your favourite coffee simple and convenient, whether at home, in the office or elsewhere. With pre-portioned coffee and machines designed for consistent results, they take the guesswork out of brewing. The dose is already calibrated, the machine configured and the operating variables minimised. Perhaps this is why, as interest in whole coffee beans and grounds grows, single-serve coffee options continue to have a loyal following.

But how should you choose your single-serve option from among the many possibilities offered by the market?

## Single-serve coffee and coffee machine, an inseparable pair

One thing must be made absolutely clear from the outset: single-serve coffee is nothing without its machine. The systems for the domestic preparation of coffee are, in fact, systems: compounds, i.e. a certain format of coffee and the machine with which to prepare it. And they are not all the same: they can be open, if the single-serve format can be used with different machines, or closed, when the capsule, pod or ball only works with hardware specifically designed for it. An aspect to take into consideration when it comes to choosing your own system.

## First on the list: the E.S.E. pods

E.S.E. (Easy Serving Espresso) pods are one of the most common single-serve systems. In coffee pod format, the portion of ground and pressed coffee is enclosed between two layers of paper, ready to be inserted into the machine. This is a standard open format, meaning pods can be used with a wide-range of compatible machines.

It was illy that produced the first espresso preparation system with single-serve coffee pods, as early as 1974. More than 50 years later, the coffee pod hasn’t lost its allure and continues to be enjoyed for the simple and quick experience it offers. Today, it is offered in the unique illy 100% Arabica blend, in the roast variants of Classico, Intenso, Forte, Decaffeinated and Classico Lungo. With another advantage: it is certified as industrially compostable.

## The variety of capsules

The description coffee capsule refers to a very large family of products. The principle is simple: the coffee dose is sealed in a small “box” that must be introduced into a machine to start the extraction. The shape, material, extraction mode and, of course, the result they offer in the cup will vary. Unlike pods, they belong mainly to closed systems, where the machine and capsule are designed to work together. Many of these technologies aim to maximise the cream, body and aromatic intensity of the coffee, for espresso in particular, the drink for which they are mainly designed.

Among the illy systems, Iperespresso is one of the most renowned. Its technology is based on a two-step brewing process that takes place directly in the capsule, that functions like a small extraction chamber. Contact between the coffee and the machine is minimised (a significant cleaning advantage) and the system has been designed to offer reliable quality in the cup, with an espresso that stands out in particular for its persistent cream.

Capsules designed so they may be used in combination with existing systems are known as compatible capsules. illy offers compatible capsules for Nespresso® Original\* machines to offer the taste of its unique blends without having to change machines.

An even more recent introduction is the X▪CAPS capsule, characterised by a symmetric shape, which guarantees easy use for a progressive and even extraction of coffee. X▪CAPS contains 85% recycled aluminium, and potentially the material can be recycled infinitely.

## The “capsule-free capsule”

Beside the pods and capsules there is a third solution: a completely different approach to the concept of single-serve coffee, which does not involve a capsule. In this option, coffee is offered without packaging, simplifying its management after use.

This is the case for illy CoffeeB: a closed system format with a ball composed of the 100% Arabica illy blend compacted and coated with a thin, natural-origin protective layer. This barrier protects coffee from oxygen and helps preserve its freshness and aromatic legacy even after opening. After use, the ball can be disposed of in the home compost or, depending on the local guidance, along with food waste.

## Beyond espresso: single serve options for filter coffee

Although espresso, more than any other, is the format that inspired the widespread use of single serve coffees, the possibilities are broader. Over the years, the same principles of practicality and consistent results have also been applied to different brews, in particular to filter coffee. illy has developed, for example, Iperespresso capsules specially designed to deliver an Americano from the Espresso&Coffee machines, which are suitable for the preparation of filter coffee. In North America, K-Cup® systems are specifically designed for drip coffee.

## Which single-serve format should you choose?

There is no single solution that suits everyone. Looking at the illy selection, those looking for broad compatibility and an industrially compostable format can opt for E.S.E. coffee pods. Those who want a system designed to enhance espresso extraction through proprietary technologies can find the best solution in the Iperespresso capsules or X▪CAPS. illy CoffeeB balls can also be thrown into the household compost after use. And for those who prefer longer brews, there are the Iperespresso capsules dedicated to delivering an Americano.

The final choice depends on consumption habits, the available machine and the type of experience you are looking for when tasting. You can be sure that whatever format you choose, the goal remains the same: delivery of consistent quality from the first cup to the last.

## FAQ

What is the difference between coffee pods and capsules?

With pods, the coffee is enclosed between two layers of filter paper; in the capsules it is contained in a shell that can have different shapes and be made of different materials. For this reason pods and capsules are not interchangeable.

What does E.S.E. coffee pod mean?

E.S.E. stands for *Easy Serving Espresso*. This is an open standard that allows you to use coffee pods with many machines that are set up for this system.

What is an open system and closed system?

An open system uses a format compatible with machines from different manufacturers. In closed systems, on the other hand, the machine and single-serve format are designed to work together and are not compatible with other technologies.

Are single-serve formats designed for espresso only?

No. There are single-serves also developed for longer preparations, such as an Americano and filter coffee.
